The 6 Types of True Adversity

After looking at sample essays in class, I realized that my essay wasn’t about true adversity. I wrote about personal experiences, and frankly, I have not gone through real adversity in my life so far. Ironic isn’t it, that I am so privileged I don’t even know what true adversity is.

There are 6 types of adversity and to better educate myself, I have done some research on each:

  1. Physical adversity-

Having a disability, being blind or deaf, having chronic pain, anything physical that makes it harder for one to have a normal life.

Ex: a professional athlete may face adversity after a career-ending injury

  1. Mental adversity-

Mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, etc.

Ex: a teen girl who is going through an eating disorder such as bulimia

  1. Emotional adversity-

Emotional immaturity which inhibits a productive state of mind and the ability to face difficulties in life, having emotions that consume you.

Ex: not having a sense of self-worth which leads to rage and sadness leading ones life

  1. Social adversity-

Being limited in social skills which can severely limit a person from getting a job, making friends, or maintaining a family unit.

Ex: someone who falls on the autism spectrum might have a harder time finding a job due to compromised social skills

  1. Spiritual adversity

When one does not have hope, compassion, and love for themselves and others, not having faith in themselves or anything else in their daily life.

Ex: someone that has an absence of faith, or not believing in the human spirit, power of community, or something as equally important

  1. Financial adversity-

Not being able to afford necessities which creates a barrier to leading a happy life

Ex: it is a fact that youth living in poverty are nearly six times more likely than their higher-income peers to experience multiple adversities

Just because many of us have not faced true adversity does not mean that our lives are not still hard. However, we should always be grateful and keep in mind that we do have it a lot easier than some people who are born with adversities that make it many times harder for them to lead a normal life or become successful.

  1. I love how you provided outside research to further our in class discussion on adversity. It was clear from our class discussion that many of us struggle to see what true adversity is. There’s a difference between everyday struggles and the kind of hardships that require someone to suffer to survive. This was very informative and well written. Great job!

  2. I really enjoyed reading your blog post Ingrid! I liked how you included many different kinds of adversities that someone can go through, and provided more research about each. I also really liked how you included part of our class discussion and made it very clear that each person goes through their own kind of adversities. Nice job Ingrid!
